Retainers in North Shore, MA

Retainers play an important role in pediatric dentistry by helping keep young smiles healthy and properly aligned as children grow. After orthodontic treatment (or sometimes to guide natural development), retainers gently hold teeth in their correct positions. This prevents teeth from shifting back and helps maintain the progress made with braces or other treatments. In some cases, retainers can also guide jaw growth and create space for incoming adult teeth.

Custom-made for comfort and effectiveness, pediatric retainers are easy for kids to wear and care for. With consistent use and regular dental checkups, retainers help protect your child’s developing smile and support long-term oral health.

01.

The Treatment Process

Once braces or aligners are removed, a custom retainer is created to help maintain the new tooth position as the mouth continues to grow. During the visit, our team takes comfortable digital impressions to design a retainer that fits your child perfectly. We’ll explain when and how it should be worn, and show both you and your child how to care for it.

With regular use and simple maintenance, retainers help protect the beautiful results of orthodontic treatment and support a lifetime of confident smiles.

Caring for a Retainer

Proper aftercare is simple and important. Encourage your child to rinse their retainer with lukewarm water and gently brush it daily using a soft toothbrush to prevent buildup. Retainers should be stored in their protective case when not in use and kept away from heat, which can cause warping. Avoid wrapping retainers in napkins or leaving them within reach of pets. Regular dental visits allow us to check the fit and condition of the retainer.

With a few easy habits, your child’s retainer will stay clean, comfortable, and effective for maintaining their confident, healthy smile.

FAQ

  • What types of dental retainers are available?

There are two main types: removable retainers (clear plastic or Hawley retainers) and permanent retainers bonded to the teeth.

  • How should retainers be cleaned and maintained?

Retainers should be rinsed with warm water and gently cleaned with dish soap and a soft toothbrush to remove plaque and bacteria.

  • When should a retainer be replaced?

A retainer should be replaced if it becomes loose, too tight, cracked, or warped, as a damaged retainer may not maintain proper tooth alignment.
